Major Renovations Complete at Maryville and Mt. Washington Elementary Schools

Mt. Washington Elementary School

During the past year and a half, the interior and exterior appearance of two elementary schools has drastically changed.

Maryville and Mt. Washington Elementary Schools were renovated with the existing open classroom concept (popular in the 1970s) replaced by traditional walls and classroom doors.

Architects Sherman Carter Barnhart made the successful bid for the renovation. The cost was $11,725,109.48 for Maryville and $11,423,724.52 for Mt. Washington.

District Construction Manager Bret Highley reported both schools received mostly the same renovation/addition including tile flooring instead of carpeting, a gymnasium addition, media center renovation and kitchen/cafeteria new equipment.

“Maryville got a new administration suite while Mt. Washington received a renovated administration suite,” Highley said.

Superintendent Keith Davis added each new facility also received all new electrical, plumbing and energy efficient geothermal heating and air conditioning.

“They are essentially new buildings,” Davis said.

Mt. Washington still faces Highway 44 but Maryville’s front is flipped. The former back of the facility is now the main entrance facing John Harper Highway.

Mt. Washington Elementary was completed in time for an open house in January 2017. Maryville’s renovation reveal was held April 30. At both facilities, staff member both past and present marveled at the differences.
