Elementary Gifted/Talented Academic Camp at Eastside Middle School
The Great Depression was part of the Economics unit of the fifth grade gifted academic camp. Students pointed out details to their classmates. The activity concluded as students gave presentations on what they drew from the photos. Some images came with captions and others allowed students to use their imaginations. There were many images from the Great Depression but a few seemed to pull students toward them. Using Eastside's corridor wall made it easier to take notes. Students were asked to write down their thoughts on four pictures. Students were assigned to look at pictures from the Great Depression and record their thoughts in notebooks. The academic camp featured several hands on activities. Fifth grade gifted students from Mt. Washington Elementary and Pleasant Grove Elementary Schools raise their hands to answer a question from teacher Kristi Hayes during an academic camp at Eastside Middle School. Students enjoyed the science activity. Marshmallows, toothpicks, pipe cleaners and push pins were the ingredients for this activity. The purpose of the activity was to explore genetic variation in species by constructing baby “Reebops.” Gifted/talented teacher Kristi Hayes worked with Caroline Harbolt on her baby reebop. This particular hands-on activity involved marshmallow meiosis. Students can work alone, in pairs, or as a group. Gifted students have assignments to complete during the academic camp. The academic camps allow participants to study topics above and beyond their grade level. A similar camp was held for elementary students at Mt. Washington Middle School. Students researched the life of Gregor Mendel then created short PowerPoints to share. Fourth grade students from Mt. Washington and Pleasant Grove Elementary Schools work in the computer lab at Eastside Middle School during the first of several gifted/talented academic camps.
