Drone Engineering Program Piloted at Eastside Middle School
Eastside Middle School seventh grade students in Anne Lopez' STEM lab watch a drone land in the back parking lot. The youth are part of a Project Lead The Way pilot class that will research, design and construct drones. A drone is an ultra light aircraft that does not require a human pilot and is battery-operated by remote control. Leslie Bates of SheDrones (http://www.shedrones.com/) has donated eight drone assembly kits at a total cost of $400. Don Yeoman of the local drone community recently demonstrated a drone’s multi-rotors and techniques. Don Yeoman describes the various parts of a drone to students. Eastside students watch Don Yeoman demonstrate a drone's hovering ability. Eastside students marvel at how light this drone is. Eastside students watch a drone fly over their school. As a drone hovers over them, Eastside students wave to the video camera. Students walk the Eastside perimeter as a drone captures video.
