NEW – - – - Beginning the 2013-2014 school year, all students enrolling in kindergarten in the state of Kentucky will be administered the Brigance Screener for kindergarten readiness. This assessment screener does not preclude entry into kindergarten.

Q. What documentation do I need to provide when registering my child in school?
A. Prior to school attendance, each child shall have on file:
- a legal birth certificate
- a Kentucky certificate of immunization
- proof of a preventative health care examination conducted within one year prior to initial entry into the school program and another preventative health care examination within one year prior to entry into the 6th grade
proof of an eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, documented on the Kentucky School Eye Exam Form - beginning with the 2010-11 school year, proof of a dental screening or examination by a dentist, dental hygienist, physician, registered nurse, advanced registered nurse practitioner or physician assistant, documented on the Kentucky Dental Screening Form (This form must be presented to the school no later than January 1 of the first year that a 5- or 6-year-old child is enrolled.)
Skills Which Ease Public School Entry and Transition
As children enter kindergarten and primary programs, the following skills have been identified as helpful in easing the transition period. Although these skills are helpful, they are not required for entry into any primary level program:
Classroom Guidelines and Rules

Walks rather than runs indoors

Waits quietly and patiently in line

Complies with simple directions provided to a group

Makes transitions from one activity to another with minimal assistance

Uses appropriate behaviors to get teacher (staff) attention

Replaces materials, cleans up own activity area

Stays with group when outside of classroom
Work Skills

Refrains from disturbing the activity of others

Stops activity when given the direction to “stop”

Works independently on developmentally appropriate materials

Waits until directions are completed to begin activities
Communication Skills

Comes to an adult when signaled

It is important to remember that all of the skills listed above are taught and reinforced throughout the kindergarten year.
