Constructed with such a high performance degree of detail, Brooks Elementary School was picked as a showcase school when architects and school district facilities personnel from across the state visit Louisville March 14-15 at the High Performance Sustainable School Buildings Workshop. Attendees learned about sustainable school design concepts during workshop sessions at the Galt House, then traveled to Brooks to see an example of a high performance school in operation. Maryville Elementary School Science Zoo
Maryville Elementary School’s annual science fair March 7 included students dressing as scientists and visiting animals in a live zoo. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest’s Whitney Wurzel was ‘Ranger Whitney’ as she welcomed youth to a display featuring animals skins, shells and a live snake.
Hissing cockroaches from Madagascar drew a lot of attention during Maryville Elementary School’s science fair and science zoo.

Evacupod inventor at Bullitt Lick Middle School
Bullitt Lick Middle School seventh grade students completed a study on survival-themed literature and writing unit in which they wrote and delivered an informative speech about survival. In light of this unit, Library Media Specialist Chip Connor (sixth grade student Tate Connor’s father) spoke with seventh graders March 1 about his company’s invention known as the Evacupod. Tate demonstrates the Evacupod with the help of his father and company assistant Justin Bauer. This emergency evacuation device has received both local and national attention. Cedar Grove Elementary School students learn about finance
Kentucky Council on Economic Education Program Consultant Betty Sue Johnson worked with Cedar Grove Elementary School fourthgraders to make Mammoth Wooley Hamburgers out of Play-do Feb. 23. KCEE and Citi volunteers presented the program Leaders Investing in Financial Education (LIFE). The KCEE staff and Citi volunteers visit classrooms in Title 1 Schools for a creative two-hour presentation to emphasize the important contributions entrepreneurs make. The students participate in simulations of a manufacturing line, exchange goods as buyers and sellers and make decisions about spending, saving and giving back to the community. The free program is made possible by the Council on Economic Education through funding from the United States Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement and Citi Foundation.

Fifth Month Student Attendance Trophies
Mt. Washington Elementary School students maintained the best attendance for the fifth month of the 2011-2012 school year. This was the second consecutive month they had the highest student attendance among 13 elementary schools.
Mt. Washington Middle School students Camryn Colvin, Summer Barr, Corey Plahuta, Autumn Turner, Abbie Thomas, Billy Jaworski and Dylan Jaworski proudly hoist the middle school attendance trophy. MWMS had the highest students attendance among six middle schools for the fifth month of the 2011-2012 school year.

2012 District Spelling Bee
The District Spelling Bee was held January 24 at Roby Elementary School. Trenten Cox of Eastside Middle School was the winner after correctly spelling the words ‘romanticize’ and ‘vendetta.’ This is the second consecutive year an Eastside student has won the district spelling bee. Big Band Musicians with the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts perform Jan. 4 at Crossroads Elementary School. Students heard songs from swing, bebop, rock and Latin trough. Music teacher Amy Cuenca wrote a grant which sponsored the band’s visit. The band is visiting from Israel, and Crossroads was chosen as one of its performance sites through an Outreach Program that is taking place during this week’s JEN (Jazz Education Network) conference in Louisville. Third and Fourth Month Student Attendance Trophies
Cedar Grove Elementary School recorded the best student attendance for the third monthof the 2011-2012 school year among 13 elementary schools. Penny Terry’s students had the highest overall attendance for the month.
Mt. Washington Elementary School students earned the attendance trophy for the fourth month of the 2011-2012 school year among 13 elementary schools. Career Readiness Center field trips
Career Readiness Center students embarked on a field trip to the BODIES REVEALED exhibit on December 2 at the Lexington Convention Center. BODIES REVEALED features 14 full body human specimens and over 200 organs to tell the story of the miraculous systems at work within each of us every second of our existence. Hebron Middle School donates most used cell phones among schools
Hebron Middle School students in Tami Drexler’s class donated 40 used cell phones to Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky topping out the school total at 357, the largest among all schools. Since she began collecting used cell phones in 2007, Ms. Ragg has amassed 2,084. Regional First Lego League Tournament held at Mt. Washington Middle School

Washington Middle School First Lego League team sponsor David Bretz enthusiastically led students in preparation for the opening parade of teams during the Mount Washington Regional First Lego League Tournament Dec. 3 at MWMS. 26 teams of maximum 10 Area children, ages 9 to 14, are among the record 171,000 children around the world who have risen to the 2011 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) “Food Factor®” Challenge. To successfully ® MINDSTORMS robot to explore the ways in which food can become contaminated – from exposure to insects and creatures, to unsterile processing and transportation, to unsanitary preparation and unsafe storage – and then propose real-world solutions for preventing or combating these contaminates. Through hands-on experience and working in teams, children have a chance to explore a real-world issue to gain an appreciation for and interest in science and technology. Former University of Louisville football player Tony (T.C.) Stallingsspoke to eighth graders Dec. 2 at Bullitt Lick Middle School as part of college day. Nichols Elementary School earned $500 for having the most students visit their booth at the Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce Showcase Bullitt County in September. They were presented a check for $500 on Nov. 22 from Park Community Federal Credit Union. Students Haley Owen, Chandler and Pressley Perdew and Robert and Douglas Hyter joined Ellie Yerkes, Director of Business Development of Park Community, Nichols Principal Sheri Hamilton, Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Freida Howe and Chamber Administrative Assistant Helen Hill.

Crossroads Elementary School students introduced their hero’s (Veterans). The guest speaker was William Rogers who served in World War II in the Army’s 1st Calvary. Following the assembly, veterans went to the grade level pod areas to share and discuss more about their own experiences and answer student question. Kindergarten students sang a special song to their veteran’s about “Loving Our America. A special lunch was provided to veterans and in the main hallway is a Wall of Heroes displayed with pictures and written descriptions created by students to share and remember their veteran family members and friends.
Kim Koontz hired as Third Party Examiner
Third Party Examiner Kim Koontz inspects a school bus as the driver navigates an obstacle course. She was hired by Kentucky Department of Education Pupil Transportation Consultant John Wyatt and works at the district transportation office. Her duties are three fold: (1) She scores the test sheet as the candidates fulfill their pre-trip test requirements which run approximately an hour. (2) She closely watches as drivers maneuver a school bus through obstacles for their road test. (3) The final test involves an actual road test where applicants are observed for the minimal level of skill to drive in most traffic situations. Before Koontz, the district had to rely on Oldham County to provide Third Party Examiner services. Now, all of Bullitt County’s testing is done right on the lot. Other districts travel to Bullitt County for their testing.

District Director of Secondary Education Dave Marshall spoke with a guest following Roby Elementary School’s college and career night. Roby was the first elementary school to host an evening for parents to get them planning for their child’s future.

Career Readiness Center students learn on location from businesses
Career Readiness Center students visited Bulk Truck & Transport Service, Inc. in Hanover, Ind., in October. BT&T has been manufacturing propane trucks for 34 years. Automotive, carpentry and welding students were greeted by the President and Founder of BT&T, Maurice Auxier. He guided students through the entire propane truck assembly process. Students explored, observed, and spoke withthe welders, technicians, auto-mechanics, painters, and the management staff. BT&T provided students with a delicious pizza lunch from Jendi’s Pizza! Health Sciences students with the Career Readiness Center toured the Nazareth Home; students observed and interacted with the residents, nursing staff, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Students learned more about healthcare related careers and the importance of education. The Bellarmine University Lansing School of Nursing allowed students to observe and interact with the faculty in the Nursing Skills and Simulation Lab. Second Month Student Attendance trophies
Freedom Elementary School students Corbin Raleigh, Olivia Sharpe, Brooklyn Hall and Blake Harshfield standwiththestudentattendance trophy. Freedom students averaged 97.79% attendance for the second month of the 2011-2012 school year which was the best among 13 elementary schools!

EMS students had 96.63% student attendance for the secondmonthofthe2011-2012 school year, the best among six middle schools. The reason for the student dress on this particular day is a Red Ribbon Week theme. EMS students observed Crazy Hat Day as they participated in Red Ribbon Week which calls attention to taking a stand against drugs and alcohol.

North Bullitt High School Army JROTC Raider Team earns honors
North Bullitt High School’s Army JROTC Raider Team competed against 16 teams from a three state area in the 1st Annual Fort Knox High School Raider Challenge that was held at Fort Knox, KY. North Bullittbrought home trophies in four out of the six events. Specifically, the team finished the 2.5 Mile Squad Run Event in secondplace. They also took second place in the Mystery Event and the HUMVEE Push and Pull Event and fourthplace in the Relay Medley Event as well. At the end of the day, cadets were able to secure FIRST Place overall honors for their efforts. It has been a few seasons since the Raider Team participated in outdoor raider meets and there were very few team members withany previous outdoor raider experience. Students started the season slow with a few trophies from the Southern High School meet where they took first place in the One Rope Bridge Event and Major Kevin Clark believes that cadets are back on track as they transition from outdoor raider meets to indoor events where he feels they can maintain the momentum.

Brooks Elementary School fifth grade teacher Daniel Mullins and Eastside Middle School Assistant Principal Kyle Buege were presented Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Awards Oct. 18 in Frankfort. They were joined by L-R: Brook Principal Cheri Lineweaver, Kentucky Education Commissioner Dr. Terry Holliday, Secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet Joseph Meyer, EastsidePrincipal Bonita Franklin, BullittCounty Public School Superintendent Keith Davis and Ashland, Inc. Mt. Washington Elementary School’s classroom challenge
Mt. Washington Elementary School Principal Terri Lewis held up a sack of ‘dog food’ that teachers at the table were prepared to consume as part of the great dog food eating challenge. It was the culmination of an incentive for the PTA Fall Fundraiser Entertainment Book. Classrooms had a certain percentage to sell (based on number of students in each room) and if that challenge was met, their teacher had to eat dog food. The school raised $7,000 profit!

Cedar Grove Elementary School fifth grade students spent one minute doing jumping jacks Oct. 11 in support of First Lady Michelle Obama and The National Geographic Kids-Let’s Jump break a Guinness World Record for the most people doing jumping jacks. The First Lady is attempting to get 20,000 or more participants nationwide to break the record. By participating, Cedar Grove is supporting an active lifestyle for children to understand the need to exercise. Cedar Grove’s physical education teacher is Linda Snyder.

Justin Johnson, a student at the Carol Martin Gatton Academy at Western Kentucky University, spoke with HebronMiddle School students October 7. Justin is a former Hebronstudent who shared insight with those who might be interested in applying for the Gatton Academy. During his sophomore year at North BullittHighSchool, he was selected to attend the Academy which offers college level courses focusing on careers in math and science. Justin informed students all of his Gatton tuition is covered, including books, and he enjoys the challenging curriculum.
Former Hebron Middle School student Justin Johnson is now taking college level classes at the Carol Martin Gatton Academy at Western Kentucky University. He spoke to several Hebron students October 7 about life at the Academy. Justin encouraged the youth to start thinking now and making preparations if they are truly serious about applying to the Gatton Academy.
First Month Student Attendance Trophies
Cedar Grove Elementary School earned the student attendance trophy for the first month of the 2011-2012 school year with 97.88%, the highest among all elementary schools. Students Abbie Sherlock, Brady Westwood, and Austin Rock exemplify youths with outstanding student attendance. Cedar Grove also recorded the best student attendance on September 15 with 98.86%.
BernheimMiddle School had the best student attendance (96.78%) among middle schools for the first month of the 2011-2012 school year. Students Emily Logsdon (eight grade), Cambron Burke (seventh grade) and Justin Mason (sixth grade) say they attempt to be at Bernheim every school day.

He informed the students they were among the thousands of Kentucky residents he represents thus they are his bosses! Rep. The first District Assembly meeting of the 2011-2012 school year featured a presentation by Donna Miller, Director of the Bullitt County Campus of Jefferson Community and Technical College (JCTC). Ms. Miller gave testimony on the 12 X 12 program which offers students who qualify college level classes while they are still in high school at a substantial savings.

Kindergarten student Audrey Rose held the ribbon for Director of Elementary Education Terry Price to cut welcoming the public to the 2011 Kindergarten Kickoff at the Paroquet Springs Conference Centre. The event is sponsored Family Resource Centers and Bullitt County Public Schools. Also participating in the ribbon cutting were district Supervisor of Social Services Susan Bibelhauser, Old Mill/Crossroads FRC Coordinator Leigh Ann Lowery, Mt. Washington/Roby FRC Coordinator Nancy McKnight, Shepherdsville/Nichols FRC Coordinator Traci Gould, Maryville/Overdale FRC Coordinator Betty Marshall, Freedom/Brooks FRC Coordinator Sherri Bishop, Cedar Grove/Lebanon Junction FRC Coordinator Tammy Perdew and Bernheim/BullittLick YSC Coordinator Tara Davis.
