Traditional Discipline versus PBIS

Traditional Discipline

  • Reactive to issues/problems
  • Problem solving approach
  • Focuses on student’s problem behavior
  • Goal is to stop undesirable behavior through the use of punishment
  • Proactive to prevent issues/problems
  • Solution focused approach
  • Teaches an appropriate behavior or skill
  • Alters environments
  • Rewards appropriate and improving behavior

PBIS

  • Proactive to prevent issues/problems
  • Solution focused approach
  • Teaches an appropriate behavior or skill
  • Alters environments
  • Rewards appropriate and improving behavior

PBIS IS NOT a packaged curriculum, scripted intervention, or manualized strategy.

PBIS IS a prevention-oriented way for school personnel to:

(a) organize evidence-based practices,

(b) improve their implementation of those practices

(c) maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students.

Within this framework, each school can tailor the “look” of PBIS to fit the needs of their students. This flexibility allows each school to personalize their approach and support success of all students

Evidence Based Features

  • Prevention
  • Define & teach positive social expectations
  • Acknowledge positive behavior
  • Arrange consistent consequences for problem behavior
  • Ongoing collection and use of data for decision making
  • Continuum of intensive individual interventions
  • Administrative leadership – Team based implementation
