Principal's Message

Principal, Mrs. Anne Marie Landry

Principal’s Message 2018/2019                   Nichols Knights, Leading the Charge of Excellence!

Welcome!  I am proud to be starting my third year as the leader of the Nichols Knights!  I am looking forward to again partnering with you to ensure that your child feels respected, safe and loved, while being challenged to do his or her very best each and every day this school year.

My leadership focus is:  “To bring out the best in myself and others.”  This includes students, teachers, staff, parents,  and community members.  Every decision I make will be considered through this lens to ensure that I am making choices that will facilitate growth.  A key component of this is to make sure that every person who enters our building feels that they are respected, safe and loved.  When respect, love and safety are evident, opportunities for learning are optimized and everyone can realize their full potential.

At NES, we put the needs of our students first.  A great way to ensure that the needs of each and every student is met, is for home, school and community to keep communication open and to work together.  Attendance is another key component to school success. With excellent attendance and open and effective communication, we will have an outstanding year, and our students, your children, will thrive.

To ensure that we are meeting the needs of the whole child, academically, socially and emotionally, and to encourage improved attendance through a sense of belonging, we are focusing on three main initiatives at Nichols this year.

To ensure that we have a keen focus on the academic growth of all of our students, we are partnering with Overdale Elementary teachers this year.  Our work in our Professional Learning Community collaborative teams will ensure that every lesson, every day, will be aligned to state standards, be rigorous, and academically relevant.

To promote a sense of safety and belonging, we are implementing a new "House" system at Nichols!  Students will spin our wheel to find out what house they will be assigned to on the first day of school!  Students will remain in that House for the entire time they are at Nichols Elementary so they will get to know all the students. This new system will help build "families" where students will be connected to students not only in their grade level but in all other grades as well.  Each House will have students from each grade level and a group of 5 or 6 teachers. House "points" will be awarded for attendance and behavior. To support their House, all students have to do is come to school and show respect to all.

To promote respect, safety and love, our second big initiative is Conscious Discipline, a comprehensive classroom management program and social emotional curriculum.   According to developer Dr. Becky Bailey, "The seven skills of discipline - composure, encouragement, assertiveness, choices, empathy, positive intent, and consequences - are the only skills needed to transform everyday discipline issues into teaching moments."

We are all very excited about PLCs, Houses, and Conscious Discipline.  In every eNews this year I will include a tidbit about things we are learning and doing to continue to grow and improve.  We are the Nichols Knights, Leading the Charge of Excellence!

I am excited to be here and I am looking forward to another wonderful year.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns, or if you want to find out how you can become more involved.
