Nichols Knights, Leading the Charge of Excellence!
Excellence - At Nichols Elementary, we lead the charge of excellence by being our best, every minute of every day for every KNIGHT!
Welcome! I am so proud to be the leader of the Nichols Knights! I am looking forward to partnering with you to ensure that your child feels respected, safe and loved, while being challenged to do his or her very best each and every day.
My leadership focus is: “To bring out the best in myself and others.” This includes students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members. Every decision I make will be considered through this lens to ensure that I am making choices that will facilitate growth. A key component of this is to make sure that every person who enters our building feels that they are respected, safe and loved. When respect, love, and safety are evident, opportunities for learning are optimized and everyone can realize their full potential.
At NES, we put the needs of our students first. A great way to ensure that the needs of each and every student is met, is for home, school and community to keep communication open and to work together. Attendance is another key component to school success. With excellent attendance and open and effective communication, we will have an outstanding year, and our students, your children, will thrive.
To ensure that we are meeting the needs of the whole child, academically, socially and emotionally, and to encourage improved attendance through a sense of belonging, we are focused on three main initiatives: Professional Learning Communities, Houses, and Social Emotional Learning.
To ensure that we have a keen focus on the academic growth of all of our students, teachers meet each week in Professional Learning Community collaborative teams. The focus of PLCs is on student progress toward mastery of standards. This work in PLCs helps us ensure that every lesson, every day, will be aligned to state standards, be rigorous, and academically relevant. Weekly PLCs also provide time for collaboration to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses and create a plan to improve student learning.
To promote a sense of safety and belonging, we have a "House" system at Nichols. Students are assigned to a House and remain in that House for the entire time they are at Nichols Elementary so they will get to know all the students. This system helps to build "families" where students are connected to students not only in their grade level, but in all other grades as well. Each House has students from each grade level and a group of several teachers. House "points" are awarded for good attendance and good behavior. To support their House, all students have to do is come to school and show respect to all!
To promote respect, safety and love, our final focus in on Social Emotional Learning. We begin each day with Mindfulness time to help frame the day in a positive and calm way. Teachers have completed many training sessions on Trauma Informed Care and Conscious Discipline techniques. According to Conscious Discipline developer Dr. Becky Bailey, "The seven skills of discipline - composure, encouragement, assertiveness, choices, empathy, positive intent, and consequences - are the only skills needed to transform everyday discipline issues into teaching moments."
I am excited to be here at Nichols and I am looking forward to another wonderful year. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns, or if you want to find out how you can become more involved.
