District Officials Share Knowledge and Talent at National Conferences

Sarah Smith

One of the best learning methods is to listen to those who have ‘been there, done that.’

District Safe Schools Coordinator Sarah Smith and Director of Human Resources Jennifer Wooley recently presented at national conferences.

Wooley is in her fourth year as President of the Kentucky Association of School Human Resources Managers (KASHRM). She served as a presenter and Professional Development Chairperson at the American Association of School Personnel Administrators (AASPA) 80th annual conference Oct. 8-12 in Minneapolis, MN.

Wooley’s topic was HR 101: Tools for the New HR Professional. Newer to HR? Curious about breaking into HR? Come and discuss the key HR responsibility and what's involved in the role. Learn tips and tricks of the trade from a veteran HR administrator.

“My goal was to provide new HR professionals with practical tools they may implement in their districts,” she said. “Several of the topics included a district recruitment fair, new educator induction, principal internship program, substitute teacher training, hiring procedures, monthly HR timeline, etc.”

Following the conference, Wooley said she received positive feedback about several of the topics she shared with the group, especially the District Recruitment Fair information.

“A new HR Director from Minnesota remained after the session to discuss this topic and others with me,” she noted. “My PowerPoint was shared with them via the AASPA mobile app and website as well as paper copies for them. If history repeats itself, I will receive emails or phone calls from attendees throughout the school year in regards to topics I shared with them.”

Wooley participated in the State Leaders’ meeting, the Committee Chair meeting and became the PD Committee Chairperson after having served as the PD Committee Co-Chair the last two years.

Even with her leadership activities, Wooley was able to attend sessions and learn new information for her role in BCPS.

“This was my third year speaking at the national conference and I spoke at the Boot Camp in Savannah last January,” she said. “It is wonderful to network with HR professionals from across the country.”

Smith presented on Bullitt County’s District Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program at the Leadership Forum PBIS Conference Oct. 3-5 in Chicago, IL.

“This is representing BCPS in our innovative ways that we use technology for fidelity and implementation for our schools that use PBIS (which is all of them),” Smith said.
