Bullitt Central High School has a wide variety of athletics, including everything from your typical cheerleading, basketball, and football -- all the way to a Fishing Team! The Fishing Team is what it sounds like: students compete in fishing. And our high school has some pretty successful fishers!
Athletic Director Jason Wells started the fishing team about five years ago, with only two students on the team.
“We fished our first tournament on March 12, 2017, with only two kids on the team and one boat,” says Director Wells. “Shortly after that, we fished our second tournament with two boats and four kids! Over the years since, we’ve had as many as sixteen kids with eight boat captains participating.”
The team currently has twelve members, with the 2021-2022 school year season beginning in March. So far, the team has fished in the SAF Kentucky State Championship on Lake Cumberland, the MLF High School Alabama Open on Lake Guntersville, where they finished fifteenth, and they placed sixth at Barren River Lake. They are looking forward to their next competition this weekend, at Green River Lake.
“The crazy thing about high school fishing is that these kids can compete for scholarship money at the larger events,” adds Director Wells. “We have competed in tournaments with as much as $100,000 in scholarship money on the line! These kids can go on to fish in college; we actually graduated one last year that now fishes for Campbellsville University.”
