Overdale Elementary uses “Calm Corner” to help students learn how to self-regulate

Overdale Calm Corner

Over the past couple of years, BCPS has dedicated itself to looking after our students’ health, whether it be physical, emotional, or mental. In the last year, due to the pandemic, our schools have become even more vigilant about looking after our students’ health. This is why many of our schools have implemented daily mindfulness and calming practices for students. At Overdale Elementary, they have even implemented a Calm Corner.

The Calm Corner is located in a room off the front office. This space is set aside for students to take care of themselves -- the space supplies calming music, dim lights, aromatherapy, and comfortable seating. Students have access to “fidgets,” such as stress balls and other small objects to occupy their hands. Students learn how to self-regulate, utilize breathing exercises, and can even practice yoga as a way to find their center of calm.

Before the pandemic, each of Overdale’s classrooms also had a calm corner for students to use. Principal Dana Brown hopes to re-introduce those corners as soon as possible.
