CAN Checks now required

Image of the words Important Notice

Dear Parents / Volunteers,

Here at Roby Elementary our volunteers and parents are a huge part of helping us create a loving and fun learning environment for our students. We really would not be able to do a lot of the things we love without your support.

With that said, we wanted to make you aware of a new change regarding volunteering, attending field trips, field day, etc. There is a new law that was recently put in to place by the Kentucky Department of Education. In addition to the current background check there is now a second check that has to be completed for the Cabinet for Family and Health Services. This background check is called a CAN Check, which stands for Child Abuse/Neglect. This check also costs $10.00 and lasts for two years, the same as the regular background check. It will also require a copy of your photo ID and can be paid via cash or check only. All checks should be made out to the KY State Treasurer. Both background checks MUST be completed to participate in any of the above events/activities and must be filled out in person as a witness signature is required. The CAN Check process as of right now unfortunately is taking up to a month.

As a parent myself I understand how frustrating this is but please be mindful that the security and welfare of our students is of the utmost importance here at Roby Elementary. If you have any questions on this matter please feel free to call or email anytime. I can be reached at 502-869-7200 or via email at
