Bullitt County Public Schools: The Leader in Educational Excellence
Steve Hornback

A retired employee of Bullitt County Public Schools is the new District 4 member of the Bullitt County Board of Education.

Steve Hornback stood beside returning board member Debby Atherton as both were officially sworn in by District Judge Jennifer Porter at a Jan. 14 board work session.

Hornback represents the Fourth District which encompasses the western part of Bullitt County while Atherton represents the Third District which is the eastern area of the county.

Hornback, 59, said he ran for office to make a difference in the lives of students and to see if there are areas where the district can be a little more conservative.

“I want to help make a significant change in preparing our kids for the work force,” he said. “I also want to address the waste that happens in our district that I feel could help with lower taxes and also could help with more safety measures.”

The 2018 school board race was the first for Hornback. Since his victory in November, he has prepared for office by listening to and working with people within the district.

“I have updated myself with the Board policies and responsibilities, also the future direction and goals the board wants to take,” he said.

Hornback sees both strengths and areas to address in BCPS.

“Some of the strengths I see in our district is the teachers/administrators and counselors,” he noted. “They really care about students and it shows.”

“I feel our weakness is in reading and math,” he continued. “A lot of our students are graduating without being able to read above a middle school level.”

In Kentucky, Hornback believes there are two primary issues facing education.

“They are budget cuts and the No Child Left Behind policies,” he said.

Hornback began his career with the district in the HVAC department and worked his way up to Maintenance Supervisor.

In his spare time, Hornback enjoys spending time with his wife and family and working on classic cars in his garage.
