Bullitt County Public Schools: The Leader in Educational Excellence

Important Immunization Changes for 2018-2019 School Year

Immunization

Starting July 1, 2018, all students in grades Kindergarten - 12 are required to receive updated immunizations and provide new certificates to schools as part of Kentucky’s amended schedule.

Non-compliance prohibits students from attending school.

District Health Coordinator Lesa Howell began announcing the amended immunization schedule in November 2017.

“All students will need a new and current immunization certificate listing all required shots for school attendance,” Howell advised.

The biggest changes are:

  • Hepatitis A vaccine for ages 12 months through 18 years in a two-dose series which must be administered six months apart. Documentation of this vaccine is required.
  • Quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) meningitis booster dose (age 16 years). Documentation of this vaccine is also required.

Howell said studies have found that protection from the meningitis vaccine decreases in many teenagers within five years, so a booster dose is needed to maintain protection during the age when most are at-risk for the disease.

She urged parents to act now in fulfilling the immunization requirements, especially concerning the HepA two-dose series or risk their kids not being allowed to attend school.

“We want to avoid a last minute rush of parents making doctor’s appointments right before school starts,” she said.

School administrators are preparing their respective administrative assistants for the enormous volume of paperwork associated with the vaccination certificates.

In addition, there is the transition from elementary to middle and middle to high school in which records must be transferred.

Howell encouraged to thoroughly review a FAQ about immunization requirements on the Bullitt County Public Schools website at www.bullittschools.org.
