Students in our BAMS Marine Biology class participated in an oil spill simulation. Students created their own crude oil and were able to test which sorbents worked best. Students tested rags, cotton balls, coffee filters, sponges and more. Students even were able to see the effects of detergent on the oil spill. At the end of the lab students made claims in regards to which sorbet may be used in a real oil spill and used evidence to support their claims.
While this touches on several parts of the BCPS Graduate Profile, it is a great example of the Community Contributor component, as students are working on ways to help improve the global community.

Today, BAMS students worked hard on moving their GE Engineering projects forward! After brainstorming many ideas for their projects or ways to improve projects from last year, they worked to determine which ideas would be: (a) easiest to build/design and (b) which would be most effective for solving the problems they identified.

Yesterday, sophomore BAMS students in English learned how genre influences the writing style of a story. Students were given the same prompt but had the opportunity to work with genres such as fairytale, mystery, tragedy, romance and more. Students presented these projects in front of their peers and were able to see first hand just how influential the chosen genre was on their story.

Yesterday Mrs. Todd's CRC History class, students learned about labor strikes in US History and the beginning of unions. Students created picket signs to tell the story of some of the most famous labor clashes in American History. They created a chant/slogans and went on strike throughout the school.

Mrs. Lewis and Ms. Coogle's BAMS students participated in a lab today that demonstrated the effects of varying levels of salinity as we were able to compare and contrast the density of extremely salty water, somewhat salty water and plain tap water. This is important because salinity affects density, which plays a role in what ultimately sinks or floats including whales, seaweed and submarines.
