🎒 BCPS Kindergarten Readiness: Week 5️⃣ Health & Physical Well-Being 🎒
We are in the home stretch, BCPS! Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 12th!
Have you registered for the 26-27 school year? Any child who is 5 years old on or before August 1st is eligible to register for kindergarten.
To ensure our young learners are fully Kinder Ready and physically prepared for the exciting school day, this week we are focusing heavily on physical well-being, motor development, and daily independence!
Fostering self-help skills and physical wellness gives your child the ultimate confidence boost, helping them thrive safely from day one:
▪️Gross Motor Skills: Running, jumping, climbing, and demonstrating basic balance, such as standing on one foot.
▪️Fine Motor Skills: Practicing holding a pencil or crayon correctly, and using child-safe scissors.
▪️Physical Wellness: Making sure your child is well-rested, has up-to-date immunizations, and passes required vision, hearing, and dental screenings.
▪️Classroom Independence: Navigating independent restroom use, managing clothing, and learning to follow simple rules and multi-step routines.
💡 Family Tips for Summer Practice:
▪️Playground Power & Scissor Safety: Visit local parks to climb, balance, and jump, which builds the core strength needed for sitting at a desk. At home, let them practice cutting playdough, scrap paper, or straws with child-safe scissors to build hand strength.
▪️Independent Restroom & Wardrobe Check: Ensure your child can use the restroom, wipe, and wash their hands thoroughly with soap completely unassisted. Practice zipping jackets, buttoning pants, and managing belts .
▪️Establish a School Sleep Routine: Start adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times now so your child is well-rested. Practice giving multi-step instructions around the house (e.g., "Please take off your shoes, put them away, and go wash your hands").
We can't wait to welcome our new students to the BCPS family. Let's Move Forward together! 🎒✨

🗣️ BCPS Kindergarten Readiness: Week 4: Language & Communication
Welcome to Week 4 of our readiness countdown! Being able to communicate clearly helps your child advocate for themselves, express their feelings, and connect with their peers. Over the summer, families can play a huge role in building communication confidence to ensure our young learners are Kinder Ready!
You can help support your child's speech and listening growth by practicing these milestones through daily conversations:
◾Expression: Encourage speaking in complete sentences of 5 to 6 words to express clear needs, wants, and ideas.
◾Comprehension: Practice listening to a short story and answering simple questions about what happened.
◾Phonological Awareness: Help them recognize simple rhyming words and sing basic songs together.
◾Personal Info: Ensure your child knows and can clearly state their first and last name, as well as their age.
💡 Family Tips for Summer Practice:
◾The "Who, What, Where" Game: After reading a book together, ask your child simple questions like, "Who was your favorite character?" or "Where did they go?" to build comprehension.
◾Rhyme Time: Play rhyming games in the car or while making dinner. Say a word like "cat" and take turns naming words that rhyme (hat, mat, sat).
◾The Identification Drill: Make sure your child practices stating their full name and age clearly. Avoid using nicknames during this practice so they are confident in introducing themselves to new friends.
