Shout-out to our amazing OMES Koalas who represented Old Mill so well at the STLP State Competition! They proudly shared how our school’s broadcast and podcast are produced, participated in a live news quiz show, and even got to meet Kelsey Starks, the show’s host! It was an incredible day full of hands-on experiences and learning how to lead through technology. We are so proud of their hard work and passion!
Ms. Miller’s 5th graders stepped outside to soak up the sunshine and spark some inspiration!
Using their senses to observe the world around them, they gathered ideas for crafting their own haikus this week. What a beautiful way to blend nature and poetry!

It’s Administrative Professionals Day, and we can’t let the day go by without celebrating the amazing women who are the heartbeat of Old Mill.
These women love our kids, support our staff, and somehow manage the behind-the-scenes chaos with grit and grace.

OMES Kindness Club is spreading joy by creating heartfelt cards for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. These thoughtful messages will be delivered along with donated items to help support families in need. Be sure to check your student’s Tuesday Folder for more information and a wish list of items you can contribute!
Our 2nd graders are diving deep into a PBL focused on Bowman Valley School. They’ve had the unique opportunity to hear from guest speakers who once attended Bowman Valley, helping them bring history to life through real stories and lived experiences. Through this project, students are blending reading and social studies as they explore the past, examine the present, and begin to dream about the future of education. Their driving question is: “How can we learn from the past to make schools better for everyone in the future?” Stay tuned for their upcoming presentation of learning as they showcase what they’ve discovered and created!
Today, students showed off their future ambitions by dressing up with tools from their trade! From stethoscopes to hard hats, cameras to keyboards, it was inspiring to see our students proudly represent the careers they dream of pursuing. The creativity and enthusiasm on display reminded us that our future is in good hands!
Today, our Energy Team got their hands dirty in the best way—by celebrating Earth Day with some planting fun! They spent time tending to our school garden, learning about sustainability, and doing their part to make the Earth a little greener.

From future doctors and firefighters to artists, teachers, and tech innovators—our halls were filled with BIG dreams and even BIGGER inspiration. We love seeing our kids envision who they want to become!
A big thank you to Jason Mersmann for volunteering his time to talk with 3rd grade about the Derby Festival Bed Races! In Related Arts, students have been learning about different Derby Festival events and creating their own versions of them—so having a real expert join in made the experience even more meaningful. With 3rd grade gearing up for their own bed race, his visit added excitement and authenticity to the project. We’re so grateful for his time and enthusiasm!
We are officially a Purple Star School!
On Friday, during our school-wide Rally, we were honored to receive our Purple Star award and banner—recognizing our commitment to supporting military-connected students and families.

Our OMES STEM teams represented us proudly tonight at the district STEM Challenge! We are so proud of both teams—their productive collaboration and effective communication truly shined. A special shoutout to our intermediate team for bringing home 2nd place! Way to go, students—you’ve shown exactly what it means to be an OMES Koala!
Our first grade students have been busy learning through a hands-on, real-world project: becoming florists! As part of their math unit, they’re using addition and subtraction to plan, budget, and design their very own flower shops.
Students are learning important skills like working with money, making smart choices, and collaborating with friends—all while having so much fun! We love seeing their creativity and confidence grow through this engaging learning experience.

Today was a day to remember at Old Mill!
Our incredible 5th graders brought history to life during A Walk Through History—a powerful learning experience that all started with one big question:
“How did the decisions of those in the past affect our lives today?”
From reader’s theater to original artwork, published books to moving monologues, our students showed what it means to be mastery learners. They explored their historical figures in depth—even using AI tools to “interview” them—and chose creative ways to share why these figures still matter today.
We are beyond proud of the hard work, passion, and brilliance poured into this event by our students and their amazing teachers. What a beautiful showcase of choice, voice, and purpose-driven learning!
