Next week, we will be recognizing Safe Schools Week at Old Mill Elementary! 💙 Each day, our Koalas will focus on building a safe and supportive school by learning about:

Positivity

Kindness

Responsibility

Developing the “Full Picture” of School Safety

Students will explore these topics in their classrooms through discussions and activities, and we will also be hosting district-wide poster and essay contests.

Some of this work will be completed at school, but we’d love for you to join us by continuing the conversation at home! Ask your student about what they learned each day and encourage them to participate in the contests.

Together, we can make Old Mill a place where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued!

In Mrs. Grady’s 5th grade class, students took ownership of their learning by running their own Socratic Seminar during reading group. As Self-Directed Navigators, they prepared thoughtful questions, guided the discussion flow, and ensured everyone had a voice. At the same time, they practiced being Effective Communicators, listening actively to their peers, responding respectfully, and backing up their ideas with evidence from the text. By combining leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking, the group demonstrated how students can drive deep and meaningful conversations when given the responsibility to lead.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Waylon 🌟

Waylon showed what it means to be a productive collaborator in Maker Space! When he noticed a classmate needed supplies, he stepped in and shared—without even being asked by an adult. His thoughtful actions helped his neighbor keep creating and showed how working together makes us all stronger. Way to go, Waylon! 👏

This week, Ms. Hill’s class dove into the theme and lesson of a story! 📚 Students worked with partners to discuss what message the author wanted readers to take away and identified the theme together. We love seeing students collaborate and grow as thoughtful readers!

We’d love for you to share how your work impacts the earth and ways we can all help keep it clean. Your voice can spark ideas and action for our Koalas to make a difference! 💚

The first Kindness Club meeting is in the books! 💛 Mrs. Yocum and Mrs. Dixon kicked things off by introducing the concept of the “ripple effect.” Students watched a short video, participated in an object lesson to see ripples in action, and paired up to discuss cause-and-effect scenarios. Club members then put their learning into action by creating posters for each grade level, challenging Koalas to share the acts of kindness they witness. For the rest of September, our Kindness Club will serve as ambassadors, encouraging their peers to give kindness shout-outs and keep the ripples going! 🌊✨

🎉 Today some of our Kindergarten and 1st grade students celebrated National Dot Day in STEAM! 🎨✨

Students rotated through stations where they explored creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. Each station gave them a chance to practice a different Graduate Profile competency, showing how even our youngest learners can grow as innovators and self-directed navigators.
