This week, Ms. Hill’s class dove into the theme and lesson of a story! 📚 Students worked with partners to discuss what message the author wanted readers to take away and identified the theme together. We love seeing students collaborate and grow as thoughtful readers!

🌎 Calling All Community Members & Local Businesses! 🌎
On October 20th, our 3rd–5th-grade students will kick off a brand-new unit with the driving question:
“How do we use our talent to encourage others to care for the earth?” We are looking for community members and local businesses to join us between 9:00–10:00 AM to help inspire our students!

We’d love for you to share how your work impacts the earth and ways we can all help keep it clean. Your voice can spark ideas and action for our Koalas to make a difference! 💚

📩 Comment below or send us a message if you’d like to be involved.

The first Kindness Club meeting is in the books! 💛 Mrs. Yocum and Mrs. Dixon kicked things off by introducing the concept of the “ripple effect.” Students watched a short video, participated in an object lesson to see ripples in action, and paired up to discuss cause-and-effect scenarios. Club members then put their learning into action by creating posters for each grade level, challenging Koalas to share the acts of kindness they witness. For the rest of September, our Kindness Club will serve as ambassadors, encouraging their peers to give kindness shout-outs and keep the ripples going! 🌊✨

🎉 Today some of our Kindergarten and 1st grade students celebrated National Dot Day in STEAM! 🎨✨

Students rotated through stations where they explored creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. Each station gave them a chance to practice a different Graduate Profile competency, showing how even our youngest learners can grow as innovators and self-directed navigators.

🌱 Class Spotlight: Mrs. Coleman’s Scientists in Action! 🌱
Mrs. Coleman’s class is diving into authentic science learning by exploring how plants use their parts to survive, grow, and meet their needs—and how we can mimic those adaptations to solve human problems. To bring their learning to life, students took a trip to our community garden, where they observed plants in action, picked fresh cherry tomatoes, and even enjoyed a little taste testing. This hands-on experience gave students the chance to connect classroom learning with the real world in a fun and meaningful way!

Ms. Bader and Ms. Denise's class took counting and number drawing to the next level today! Students used manipulatives to build numbers, paired with Kagan strategies to share their thinking and collaborate with classmates. This hands-on approach builds productive collaborators and mastery learners — two of the BCPS Graduate Profile competencies that prepare students for life and learning beyond the classroom. 💛

🌟 Student Shout-Out 🌟
Today’s shout-out goes to Avery! During the Fun Run, when a friend tripped and fell, Avery immediately stopped to help her up and made sure she was okay. 💛 She showed what it means to be an effective communicator by offering kindness and care, and a self-directed navigator by making the responsible choice to put others first. Way to go, Avery—you’re a great example of compassion and leadership! 👏
